Blood Sugar Meter - A Must-Have Device For Any Diabetic Patient

By Sheryl Duvan

Living with diabetes is challenging and a bit difficult. Diabetes is a disease that occurs when a person's body doesn't make enough hormone insulin or cannot use insulin properly. Insulin allows glucose (a form of sugar) to enter all cells of your body and use this sugar as a form of energy. For those with diabetes, the glucose builds up on the blood instead of entering the cells. Too much glucose in ones blood can lead to serious health problems.

People with diabetes are required to have a regular monitoring of their blood sugar level which helps in taking better care of their disease. Also, with the regular monitoring of the blood sugar, patients can learn how the food, activity levels, stress, medicine, and insulin affect the level of the blood sugar. Getting the blood sugar level is usually done by lancing a finger with a needle to produce a pinprick of blood that is to be tested by a computer called the blood sugar meter, which will then calculate the patient's glucose level.

The blood sugar meter or the glucometer that is used in monitoring the blood sugar level is a very important device for people who need regular checking of glucose level especially those who have diabetes. This device is available in the market and comes in different sizes, functionality as well as dimensions. Before purchasing a glucometer, keep in mind that there are few things to be taken into consideration.

The reliability and the accuracy of the readings produced by the machine is one of the things to be considered. The user must be confident of the results given by the blood sugar monitor or else your device would be of no use. Remember that inconsistent and unreliable results may lead to improper treatment of the illness which may result to further complications in the future.

Ease of use or the complexity of blood sugar meter is another important factor that needs to be considered when buying. Make sure that you know how to use the machine. Try asking the pharmacist or educator how it is being used and if you still do not get it right by the time your reach the second try, then you should find another one. The size of the meter can also affect the ease of use of the machine. The average size of the machine is the size of the palm of the hand, though some are smaller or larger.

The third important consideration is the speed the machine produces readings. The recommended speed for the results to be generated is around 5 to 45 seconds. These results should then be displayed in a manner that is not difficult to understand. Most blood sugar meters display glucose value in mg/dl or mmol/l. However, it is important to note that preferred measurement unit varies by country: mg/dl are preferred in the U.S., France, Japan, Israel, and India. Mmol/l is used in Canada, Australia, China and the UK. Germany is the only country where medical professionals routinely operate in both units of measure. Many of the available blood sugar meters in the market can easily toggle between the two measurements.

Other important factors to be considered in purchasing the blood sugar monitor includes the amount of the blood sample needed and also the budget. Patients who uses blood sugar monitor prefer those monitors that require less amount of blood sample. It is also important to alternate the testing site in choosing as it allows the patient to choose where the blood sample come from, may it be on the earlobe, forearm, thigh as well as from the fingertip. Finally, for patients who are on a low budget, there available monitors that are affordable though needs replacement periodically depending on the features of the meter.

Nonetheless, always remember that the best blood sugar monitor is the one that suits your needs. The perfect meter for me may be different form the perfect meter for you.

It is necessary to maintain the quality of the food intake. If the patient has good nourishment the blood sugar levels are taken care of without the need for medication.

All the doctors recommend that one eats as much protein as fats, but this in all must be less than the total carbohydrates. In short, if one eats too much fat or protein they are not likely to benefit from it.

It is recommended that one eats to a plan. This is also useful if one is not dieting. The most comprehensive plans recommend that one eats a good portion of carbohydrates. The other portion is partitioned between proteins and fats.

The main thing in eating is maintaining a diet and regular exercises. Good nourishment is required for those who are a little below the par. When you are eating out of your diet it will make way for a lot of uneasiness.

Statistics show that as many as 30% of people diagnosed with diabetes type 1 will experience some sort of illness as a result of kidney disease or 'nephropathy'. The kidneys act as a filter for waste products in the body, and if they are not functioning properly, the body cannot get rid of this waste efficiently. People with diabetes are up to four times more at risk of being affected by cardiovascular disease than non-sufferers. New Century Spine Centers in San Diego Reveals Cutting Carbohydrates May Be Better Than A Low-Fat Diet.

By Mike Pritsker

Eating fat is no good. But no wait, aren't carbohydrates evil. One expert will say one thing, and then another doctor will say something else. Back and forth this story goes. Maybe that new infomercial selling the latest miracle weight loss vitamin is the way to go? In the meantime, you're confused and not losing any weight. Well, get ready for some possible answers and even a few more questions. As a chiropractor in San Diego, chiropractic patients regularly ask these questions.

Studies show that not all people have the same response to diets. First, the results of a new study in the June 19th, 2010 edition of The Endocrine Society reports obese women with insulin resistance lose more weight after three months on a lower-carbohydrate diet than on a traditional low-fat diet with the same number of calories. The study's lead author, Raymond Plodkowski, MD, Chief of Endocrinology, Nutrition and Metabolism at the University Of Nevada School Of Medicine, Reno wrote, "The typical diet that physicians recommend for weight loss is a low-fat diet.

According to the researchers, for this group of women, the lower carbohydrate diet is more effective, at least in the short term. The study lasted 12 weeks and was funded by Jenny Craig. It found the insulin resistant women on the lowest-carb diet lost 3.4 pounds more than those on the low fat diet. Total calories for all groups were the same. The low fat diet included 60% of its calories from carbohydrates, 20% from fat, and 20% from protein. The low-carbohydrate diet included 45% of its calories from carbohydrates, 35% from primary unsaturated fats, and 20% from protein. Both diets included a minimum of 2 fruits and 3 vegetable servings a day. The use of prepared meals made the structured diets easier and more palatable for the dieter. "These data have potential widespread applications for clinicians when counseling people with insulin resistance to help improve weight loss as part of a calorie-restricted diet," Plodkowski said. "They should at least initially lower their carbohydrate intake."

Since the women in the abovementioned study were all insulin resistant, you might be wondering, "What is insulin resistance?" Insulin resistance is a condition where the body produces insulin but does not use it properly. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas to break down glucose in the blood so it can be used for energy. Glucose is a form of sugar and is the body's #1 source of energy. After your digestive system breaks food down into glucose, glucose is then transported to different parts of your body via the bloodstream. Glucose in the blood stream is called "blood glucose" or "blood sugar." After you eat, blood glucose levels rise and your pancreas secretes insulin to allow cells to absorb and use the glucose.

When people are insulin resistant, they do not respond properly to insulin. In other words, even though the pancreas secretes insulin, it is not effective in getting the glucose from the blood into the cells. More insulin is needed so the pancreas works harder and secretes more. Eventually, the pancreas cannot keep up with the increased demand and glucose builds up in the blood. This is the beginning of diabetes. It is common for diabetics to have high levels of both glucose and insulin circulating in the bloodstream. Insulin resistance not only sets the stage for developing Type 2 Diabetes, it increases the odds of the number one killer in America: heart disease. According to the American Diabetes Association: "People with diabetes have a higher-than-average risk of having a heart attack or stroke. These strike people with diabetes more than twice as often as people without diabetes."

So what is insulin resistance caused by? There seem to be several contributing factors to this. The first factor may be some form of genetics. Some scientists think specific genes make certain people more susceptible to insulin resistance than others. But, genes aren't everything. Weight and lack of physical activity also seem to play a major role. Then, there are also the types of food you eat. The more junk sugars (ice cream, candy bars, etc.) you eat, the more your little pancreas has to work to keep up with all the sugar that has been dumped into the bloodstream. According to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse, "The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) and other large studies have shown that people with pre-diabetes can often prevent or delay diabetes if they lose a modest amount of weight by cutting fat and calorie intake and increasing physical activity; for example, walking 30 minutes a day 5 days a week. Losing just 5 to 7 percent of body weight prevents or delays diabetes by nearly 60 percent. In the DPP, people aged 60 or older who made lifestyle changes lowered their chances of developing diabetes by 70 percent." Just like everything else, there is only so much work your pancreas can do. If the pace is too high for too long, it will basically burn out and quit. It is important to stop this process before it gets too far. Exercise, weight loss and proper diet can reverse many cases of insulin resistance and pre-diabetes.

With all of this information, the most important message to take away is this: Lifestyle has a major impact on your health. Different people react to different foods and diets in different ways, and it is important to pay attention to what you eat and figure out what is best for you. But no matter what, regular exercise and staying away from junk food loaded with bad fats and sugar is a very good idea. Research may not have all the answers yet, but to our knowledge, there is no study that says sitting on the couch stuffing your face with candy bars and ice cream is good for your health.

Diabetes and Your Diet -What You Should Know

By Athena Hunter

The truth about the diabetic diet is that it does not exist as a particular diet that only includes certain foods. Diet simply means what you're eating and this diet is perfect for anyone.

Foods with low glycemic rating are often recommended for diabetics. Foods with a low GI rating don't cause a huge spike in your blood sugar levels. What you want to avoid is an unstable situation with your blood sugar.

Eating high GI rated foods can be connected to obesity. It can be dangerous to be obese when you're also diabetic. It can be difficult to manage the serious risks that can be caused by excess weight.

It's important to limit the amount of highly processed foods you eat because they are often high in calories, sugars, and unhealthy, saturated fats. Diabetics really need to be careful to avoid gaining weight. White, refined sugar is highly processed and essentially contains empty calories. Empty calories lack nutritional value and are almost immediately converted into fat. The only way to prevent that is to either burn the calories or not eat them in the first place. So if you don't already read the labels when shopping, you should start now.

Diabetics are at increased risk for developing heart disease. So in addition to managing blood sugar, it is imperative to also take care of your cardiovascular health. Avoid high cholesterol and high blood pressure. You should have your cholesterol levels checked if you haven't already. You should also be avoiding foods that are high in saturated fats.

Diabetics are at an increased risk for heart diseases, strokes, and other related diseases, for example. For this reason, it's critical for diabetics to watch their cholesterol levels and their blood pressure. Fats like omega-3's are the best kind to consume because your body does need fat to function properly.

Talking to your doctor about carbohydrate substitution is important, however. There are can sometimes be exceptions to the rule, and you need to make sure it is safe for you to do that.

Diabetes Symptoms to Watch For

By Vania Kraft

Identifying the primary signs of diabetes can help you avoid complications with the disease. Unfortunately a great number of symptoms that present themselves outside of the body for diabetes are also signs of other illnesses.

The most obvious symptom of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes is that the body no longer produces insulin the way it is supposed to. Although this is not as noticeable as, say, the signs for the common flu. Ordinarily, this is only recognized when you visit your doctor for a different matter. The lack of insulin is found when a blood test is done or when your organs are tested. Type 1 most often is diagnosed when a person is quite young and is generally noticed, due to the physician trying to diagnose a flu bug or something similar. Have you felt more irritable without any outside reason? If your irritability goes beyond normal bad mood, then the culprit could be your blood sugar levels are out of sync. It is important to get checked for diabetes if your blood sugar levels are not stable. When you start becoming diabetic, the body stops processing food properly which in most cases leads to increased irritability. Have you doctor test you for diabetes and hypoglycemia if you can't find a reason for your mood swings.

Type 1's chief symptoms and indicators of onset include nausea, vomiting, and dehydration. These frequently happen when the body stops making insulin or the levels of potassium become funny. Type diabetes, also called juvenile onset diabetes, happens because of genetics and heredity and not typically from factors that can be regulated. If your son or daughter is acting a bit out of sorts and you think they may have the stomach flu, requesting that they have some testing for diabetes is a smart idea. A pediatrician will most likely do some initial testing anyway, just to rule against the sickness.

One of the signs of diabetes that is more difficult to figure out, especially in yourself is when you feel a bit out of sorts. We all have days where we have difficulty paying attention. If you are suddenly feeling agitated, confused or even irritable and can't figure out why you feel that way, it could be due to you experiencing one of the symptoms of diabetes. It is not hard to realize this in others, however it is more difficult to see it in yourself.

Make sure to remember that the symptoms that are directly associated with diabetes are not usually shown outwardly. A blood test and test of your pancreas will be needed to definitively diagnose you. Once you have the correct diagnosis, you'll be more likely to discover how to feel better and get back to your usual lifestyle.

The Right Getational Diabetes Diet For you

By Bobby Lee

Striving to keep the right amount of carbohydrates, proteins and fats will keep the blood sugar levels within the normal level that's essential in gestational diabetes. 1 serving of carbohydrate food consists of about twelve grams of carbohydrate that is needed to cure pregnancy diabetes.

Greens consist of only 5grams of carbohydrates per serving.I observed that a number of women with gestational diabetes could control their blood glucose level with diet plan alone. Cookies, chips, candy and cake can spike blood glucose and allow it to be hard to deal with for the body. Soft drinks usually contain lots of sugar and little nutrition, so choose low calorie alternatives or drink water.

An effective Remedy For Type 2 Diabetes - The Type 2 Diabetes Diet

By Elena Finch

You will find 3 primary types of diabetes, although the most generally observed in sufferers is type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes takes place when the insulin produced normally is insufficient or the body is not able to make use of the naturally produced insulin; in contrast to the type 1 patients, who can produce insulin normally. The state exactly where the body is unable to utilize the produced insulin is called insulin resistance. The insulin resistance affects the body adversely; it stops the processing of sugar by the body. More than ninety % of the Type 2 diabetics suffer from insulin resistance.

Sugar is the main supplier of energy for our cells. Insulin will help in the absorption of sugar by the cells present in the blood stream. In insulin resistant state, this sugar can't be absorbed properly and a large amount of it remains present within the blood. This presence of sugar leads to damage to the body, such as kidney failure, heart strokes, damage to eyesight and so on.This state is extremely harmful for anyone because it increases the risk of heart attacks and affects the heart brutally. It causes dehydration and may even turn out to be the cause of a diabetic coma.

The two main factors that may trigger this illness are obesity and lack of exercise.According to the doctors, individuals who have a family history with diabetes are much more vulnerable to this disease. Although, nobody can pinpoint the exact causes of this disease, yet physicians have found some common traits among the patients of type 2 diabetes. These individuals usually have very reduced levels of good cholesterol, their life style includes little or no exercise and mostly they're extremely overweight.

As soon as diagnosed with type 2 diabetes it does not mean the end of the world. After consultation with your doctor, you can effortlessly cure it. The primary remedy that any doctor suggests is the special type 2 diabetes diet. It is rather important to get a patient to know the significance of type 2 diabetes diet plan simply because the prognosis of this disease is hugely associated to the patient's diet. All of us know that the food we eat is made up of three major components namely proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Carbohydrates are the main source of sugar and glucose within the body. There are two types of carbohydrates found; simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates.

The simple carbohydrates are effortlessly absorbed within the body while it takes the body longer to break down the complex carbohydrates. This implies that complex carbohydrates are great for type 2 diabetics because they take longer to become absorbed within the blood stream. Type 2 diabetes diet plan requires this fact into account. Doctors usually prescribe a type 2 diabetes diet plan to their patients and recommend them to consume only a given amount of carbohydrates in a single day and not more than that. These complex carbohydrates are often found in natural food unlike the processed and packed meals. Thus, the type 2 diabetes diet is mostly based on natural food and promises a quick recovery to healthier life.

Research finds link between statins and diabetes

By Tamara Ballantyne

A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) warns that people taking high-dose statins are increasing their chances of getting diabetes. Researchers found that people taking 80mg doses of simvastatin or atorvastatin (both of which are widely prescribed) over a period of 5 years were 12% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Nevertheless, the benefits outweigh the risks according to experts. Statins lower cholesterol, and therefore reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

There are around 200,000 people in England who take 80mg doses of simvastatin or atorvastatin every day. Most of those have suffered a heart attack or stroke in the past. The research, which was led by Dr David Preiss at Glasgow University, looked at a sample of 33,000 people taking moderate or high-dose statins across five separate studies. None of them had diabetes initially.

Researchers discovered that for every 498 people taking high-dose rather than moderate-dose statins for a year, an extra person would develop diabetes. Conversely, the high-dose statins would also avert at least 3 more cardiovascular events in a group that big.

Another study, in which Dr Preiss was also involved, was published in The Lancet last year. Researchers found that taking moderate doses of statins led to a 9% increase over 4 years in the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

So far, researchers haven't been able to understand why statins seem to trigger diabetes in some individuals. Experts have advised anyone who has been prescribed statins should not to cease taking in response to this research. Dr Sharlin Ahmed at The Stroke Association said that all patients should be assessed and treated on the merits of their case, adding that health professionals should determine whether patients exhibit existing risk factors for either diabetes or stroke / heart attacks.

Diabetic Types - Should Your Diet Change With Your Type Of Diabetes?

By Samantha Smith

It cannot be emphasized enough that dieting plays a vital function in dealing diabetes, whatever type it may be. Basically, there are 3 usual types of diabetes, the type 1, type 2, and gestational type. In type 1 diabetes, there is absolutely no insulin developed by the body, so insulin medications are required to render the body with the required insulin to sustain blood glucose levels. On the other hand, insulin is still developed in type 2 diabetes, but they are either inadequate or the cells have already builded up resistance toward the insulin. Finally, gestational diabetes takes place during pregnancy and is not much different from type 2 diabetes.

Since the problem in diabetes is the deficiency of insulin in general, the diet for each type of diabetes does not vary much. Most of the diabetic diet plans focus on choosing foods that do not have too much effect on the blood sugar. Diabetic diets do not contain very much of calories, fats, sugar, and cholesterol. Rather, these healthy diabetic meals oftentimes include veggies, fruits, whole grains, dairy products, fish, lean meat, and beans. These foods are rich in vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients especially demanded by people struggling from diabetes.

One of the commended foods for diabetics is whole grains, since these contain much of complex carbohydrates. Starches and whole grains can become the body's source of vitality, and approximately 6-11 servings per day are enough for any kind of diabetic. Instances of these foods include pasta, bread, corn, wheat, and potatoes.

Veggies and fruits are as well great in a diabetic meal plan because they contain great amounts of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Moreover, they contain little fat, which make them excellent foods for diabetics. You can also have some other plannings for these foods so that there is a presence of variety in each diabetic meal that you create.

Dairy products and meat products can as well be presented to diabetics, provided that they only consume 2-3 servings per week. Naturally, sweets, fatty foods, and alcohol should be taken minimally and in moderation because these foods can only aggravate your disease condition.

Aside from the types of foods, it is also important for every diabetic to recognize the right amount of food to take. Unlike normal people, diabetics cannot eat the same amount of food that non-diabetics eat. They must determine how to stick to their servings, measure their portions with care, and control their cravings, since overeating can result to quick rushes in blood sugar levels.

The timing of eating up is also a very important condition for any type of diabetic. Diabetics usually take lots of hypoglycaemic drugs, like insulin, throughout the day. There may be cases when an individual experiences hypoglycemic or low blood glucose episodes, and this is ordinary among those that take maintenance drugs that lower their blood sugar levels. Because of this, it is essential for them to stick with a scheduled diet plan, plus also include healthy snacks in between. This is to ward off sudden falls in a diabetic's blood sugar levels.
