Learn More About Diabetes And Your Heart

By Greg Tilley

One condition that must be treated as soon as it is diagnosed is diabetes even though in its early stages it doesn't hurt, or cause inconvenience, or create any worrisome symptoms. But ignoring it is a mistake, because the blood sugar imbalance we diabetics live with can cause a variety of complications, even leading to other serious health conditions.

One major cause for concern is adverse effects on our hearts. A big step on the road to heart problems is our unstable blood sugar levels as it can cause poor circulation. Below are some of the things you need to watch out for.

What is hypertension?

Most of the time, diabetes goes hand-in-hand with high blood pressure, or hypertension. Your doctor, in fact, will inform you that diabetics must work to get their blood pressure down even lower than other people. For the general population, a systolic pressure (the top number) of 140 might be acceptable but for us diabetics, we should aim for 130 or lower. These are all, in fact, a part of the battle against possible heart disease.

What about blood fats?

Blood fats, also known as cholesterol and triglycerides, also need to be kept lower in diabetes. Your best bets for dietary blood fat control are lots of fruits and vegetables and fewer packaged or fried foods. How about if you throw out that frying pan?

What is blood sugar?

You also need to monitor blood sugars as consistently high levels damage blood vessels and can lead to cardiovascular difficulties.

Weight level

Of course, you are also aware that it's very important to maintain a healthy weight. Any ideas why that is particularly important for us diabetics? If you happen to be overweight, then this would mean that your heart muscle needs to work harder to pump blood through your system. In turn, this will weaken your blood vessels, which are then more susceptible to damage from fluctuating blood sugar levels. It's a vicious cycle you don't want to create.

You need to do everything possible to keep it in good shape since your heart is the main engine for your whole body. For the sake of a healthy heart, take control of your diabetes.
