Orthopedic Socks: The Foot Pain Reliever

By Slade Keegan

There are shoes present today that help people with foot issues, and there are also socks that do the same. Plantar fasciitis is the condition you call when one feels pain on their plantar fascia, this is the strip of connective tissues that support the arch of the foot. This pain is usually felt in the morning when you wake up, particularly on your first few steps as you get up from bed. This is something to worry about because if left untreated, you might one day be unable to walk because the pain will worsen.

People who are commonly targeted by this condition are athletes. Athletes practice almost every day to become better at the sport they love. Sports, especially outdoor sports, make use of our legs. The plantar fascia becomes inflamed when excessive stress is put into it, this will result in a torn tissue which leads to pain. Some shoes that are ill-fitted may also cause plantar fasciitis. When you have this condition, the pain is usually felt in the morning when you wake up.

To better understand how orthopedic socks work you should first know how one acquires plantar fasciitis. Think of a large rubber band, this rubber band represents the tissue within your sole. If you have plantar fasciitis, this rubber band contracts when you rest or sleep. If you try to move to take a step forward, the movement causes the rubber band to stretch, when it does it will produce pain, you will then need orthopedic socks.

These specially designed socks will put your calf and arch of your foot in a neutral to stretched position so that your plantar fascia will be unable to contract while you rest or sleep. As a result, you will feel less or no pain at all when you take your first few steps in the morning once you get out of bed. You will find orthopedic socks to be comfortable, they are designed to have a snugged fit but doesn't have too much pressure that other socks do which tends to squeeze your foot until it gets numb. The materials used are mostly cotton to prevent irritating ridges.

To clarify things, orthopedic socks do not cure plantar fasciitis, they are footwear that help in relieving pain in the morning. Professionals who do medical care and treatment on the human foot, also known as podiatrists, believe that wearing orthopedic socks help in healing those torn muscles quicker because of what it does to the foot. It will guide the tissue so that it won't get more damaged and, at the same time, heal faster. Socks are more affordable so they have an edge over shoes. Another thing to clear things up is that you do not wear orthopedic socks all the time, it isn't practical, only wear them when you're at home de-stressing.

What Are the Symptoms of Diabetes?

By Marvin Kimber

What made you land on this article? Are you still guessing if you have a disease? Still confused and becoming very much worried about your health? Fret not. Some people deny the fact that something is wrong with their health and their body system, but good thing, you are looking for an answer to what you are really feeling today.

Answer the following questions, honestly: Do you urinate frequently that you think it's not normal anymore? Do you get dehydrated easily and always find the need to drink water even though you just drank a glass of it? Do you feel tired that easily? Do people around you notice that you are becoming more irritated nowadays than before? Do you lose weight excessively even if you are not really into a diet? Then it's positive. You are experiencing and exhibiting some of the symptoms of diabetes.

Diabetes mellitus or simply diabetes, as often called, is oftentimes neglected or denied by the people who experienced the symptoms stated above due to the thought that the symptoms are harmless and appear normal. However, people do not realize the importance of early detection of diabetes so as to minimize its effect on the human body. If you experience excessive thirst, frequent urination, unwanted weight loss, sudden exhaustion and irritability, then you are diabetic.

Other symptoms of diabetes such as having a blurred vision, numbness on different parts of your body, most especially in the hands and feet, bruises that seem too long to recover and heal, and recurring infections in your bladder, gum, skin, or reproductive organ suggests that you must see a doctor immediately.

Notwithstanding the two types of diabetes, both have the same symptoms. However, the type 2 diabetes afflicts more people than the type 1 diabetes. The symptoms of diabetes sometimes take years before the disease will be detected. When the patient is diagnosed of diabetes, oftentimes, he/she already has a complication. It is then important to have your family doctor check your health regularly to be able to track these symptoms so that you can immediately change the way you live and the way you eat.

The earlier you detect these symptoms and the doctor to diagnose it, the better. See your family doctor today if you feel you are experiencing the symptoms mentioned above. You can ask for you to run a blood test to ensure that you have or you do not have diabetes.

Major Diabetes Symptoms

By Masako Perruzzi

Diabetes is an illness that burdens people of every age. There are two forms of Diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 is mostly hereditary and genetic. Type 2 is usually a fruition of lifestyle and environmental factors. While the disease is not always entirely avertable, for the most part it can be warded off for quite awhile. One of the best ways to get as much personal regulation over the illness as possible is to learn how to observe the chief signs of diabetes. Once you know how to identify the major symptoms of this disorder you stand a better chance of controlling it and not letting it affect your life in any major way.

The most distinctive indicator of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes is that the body no longer produces insulin the way it usually does. However, this is not as obvious as, say, the indicators of the common flu. Usually, this is only observed when you visit your physician for another matter. The lower amount of insulin is discovered when blood testing is done or when you have your organs tested. Type 1, which is generally diagnosed when a person is young, is almost always found because a medical physician is attempting to diagnose an infection.

A leading sign of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes is that the body no longer produces potassium the right way. When the body's potassium gets messed up, this can cause an array of different physical syndromes - like dehydration, an altered mental state and sometimes even a coma can happen if the issue is not noticed in time. This out of whack production of potassium is usually diagnosed wrong in the beginning, which is why if you are feeling unwell you should be insistent with your medical professional about being as exhaustive as possible when diagnosing you. You don't want the doctor to send you off with a prescription for antibiotics when the actual problem is diabetes!

How often do you urinate during the day? This might be something you feel uncomfortable answering aloud. You should at least answer the question in your mind. While some may say that is it actually the excessive thirst diabetes sign that causes this excessive urination, physicians insist that it is a symptom all on it's own. It you recognize that you are always running to the bathroom--even if you aren't consuming much food or drink--you should talk to your medical professional about checking out your potassium and bladder functions. It is highly likely that when the medical professional takes these tests, they might discover diabetes.

Diabetes is generally pretty hard to diagnose. This is because not all people are familiar with the biggest signs of diabetes so they don't know what to be on guard for. A good rule of thumb is if you are acting different than your normal self, it is time to contact your medical professional. Don't forget the indicators that are directly related to diabetes are not usually exhibited outwardly. A blood test and test of your pancreas will be needed to definitively diagnose you. Upon obtaining the right diagnosis, you'll be able to see how to feel better and get back to your normal self.

Bangor University receives funding from Diabetes UK for genetic research

By Chad Fontaine

Researchers at Bangor University are due to study a previously overlooked gene (Pdx2) which could potentially play a part in the treatment of diabetes. Researchers hope to learn more about how the gene works and how to activate it, and establish whether it might open up new treatments for people with type 2 diabetes.

Charity Diabetes UK are funding the Bangor University study with a 14,500 grant, having made 960,000 available for research projects across Wales. Diabetes is becoming increasingly common, meaning that research into treatments is more important it has ever been.

Existing research has shown that the Pdx1 gene is involved in making insulin-producing cells in the human body. Dr Mulley hopes to discover new genetic pathways for insulin regulation or the production of insulin-producing cells. These could then be adapted for use in humans and for future diabetes treatments.

Dr Victoria King, Head of Research at Diabetes UK, has commented on the importance of finding new treatments, stating that "once the insulin-producing beta cells have been destroyed in diabetes they have a limited, or almost non-existent, capacity to regenerate." She said that researchers face the challenge of working out how "diverse organisms manage to regenerate insulin-producing cells, or regulate their insulin and glucose levels." This information could then be harnessed to develop new treatments for diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes appears either when the body is unable to make enough insulin, or when the insulin that is produced doesn't function as it should, causing glucose to gather in the blood. Between 85% and 90% of diabetes sufferers have the type 2 variety, and, for most of them, this is linked to being overweight. Sometimes, a diagnosis isn't made until 10 years after the condition begins, which means many people experience complications that could have been avoided.

The Signs and Symptoms of Diabetes - What You Should Be Watching For

By Mark Rain

The symptoms of diabetes can go unnoticed in many people. This could result in health problems when the disease is not properly diagnosed and treated. Several research reports have figured that the sooner the problem is treated for diabetes, the greater the probabilities of avoiding future complications.

Treatment is likewise needed in order to improve the quality of life of the patient. One reason the symptoms of diabetes can go unnoticed is because many of these symptoms of diabetes, when experienced, are not alarming. Actually, some may not even seem like symptoms at all.

The examples below are a listing of the most common signs and symptoms of diabetes, listed by type of diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes Symptoms

Always thirsty

The Tendency to Urinate Quite Often

Hunger that feels excessive

Losing weight that isn't expected

Extreme feels of fatigue

Irritability for no reason

Type 2 Diabetes Symptoms

The above symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes

Frequent infections

Problems with vision, including blurred vision

Open wounds that don't heal as soon as they should

A feeling of tingling or perhaps numbness in the hands and feet

Problems with skin or mouth lesions

Anyone who suffers from any of these type 2 diabetes symptoms really should check with their doctor at the earliest opportunity. Being tested for diabetes is quick and easy, often a simple blood or urine test, and is the only sure way to know if you have the disease or are in danger in the near future.

There are particular individuals who may be at a greater risk for diabetes symptoms compared to other segments of the population. Those who may be at a greater risk consist of:

Women that are pregnant for Gestational Diabetes

African Americans

Native Americans

Asian Americans

Native Hawaiians

Being overweight

Not getting enough exercise

Family history of diabetes

It needs to be noted that not all peoples who fall under the above list will experience or even have diabetes symptoms. This list is just a reminder for individuals who may be in one of these age, racial, or gender groups.

Besides the above, there are also some popular lifestyle issues that can result in the onset of diabetes symptoms or pre diabetes. These include:

Untreated Diabetes Symptoms

If diabetes symptoms remain neglected, it can result in serious health complications. Some of the following complications might take years to progress while others may occur abruptly. Note: Not all of the next complications can happen in all people.

Certain eye complications like glaucoma can occur in people that have diabetes mellitus. Cataracts, in addition to blurred vision, also occur. A lot of those with diabetes may encounter issues with their feet. At its most unfortunate, this might lead to gangrene and possible amputation. Those with Type 2 diabetes must be particularly careful when clipping toenail or walking barefoot, as this can result in sudden and virulent infections. Any wound to the foot should be reported to a medical professional immediately.

Type 2 diabetes may also lead to high blood pressure and possible heart disease. Frequent check ups can help avoid most of the dangers that fall under this category. Furthermore, proper diet and exercise can go far in helping most diabetics to avoid hypertension and heart related illnesses.

While diabetes symptoms or signs might not always be easy to differentiate from other issues, they are well-documented and trustworthy. If you, or someone in your family, experience any of the above diabetes symptoms, consult with your physician. As mentioned above, testing is fast and easy and it can be your lifesaver.

The American Diabetes Association And Beachbody Programs Supporting Health

By Paula Hensey

There are multiple forms of diabetes, which you may or may not have heard of, but the most common type is called type 2 diabetes. The American Diabetes Association and Beachbody programs are working together to support the reduction of the disease in the susceptible population, and to help people who already have it feel better and live longer.

Eating a poor diet and carrying a lot of excess weight have been implicated in type 2 diabetes, as well as genetics and other environmental factors. People who exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet, don't smoke, and maintain a healthy weight have up to an 89% lower chance of developing the disease than those who do not.

The importance of genetics cannot be discounted, however. People with first-degree relatives (parent, sibling, child) who have the disease are at a significantly higher risk than those without. And identical twins, who share their entire genetic makeup, are almost certain to either both have the disease, or neither have it.

Since there is nothing one can do about their genetic risk for developing a disease, it is important to focus on preventative measures that are within your ability to change. Getting regular exercise, which will help you lose weight and control your blood sugar, is important both in preventing diabetes and in staying healthy once you have it. Because they recognize this, the ADA has endorsed the use of Beachbody fitness programs as a healthy step for those who have diabetes, or worried about getting it.

Each of the Beachbody fitness programs is a packaged set of exercise DVDs from a specific discipline. They may be geared towards losing weight, trimming trouble spots, or just generally shaping up, and you can do so via an amazing number of activities. There's dancing of all types, as well as pilates, yoga, martial arts, and more.

There are various trainers on the DVDs, so you can choose one whose style appeals to you. Some of the sets come with additional materials such as gloves for kickboxing, or an exercise ball for doing pilates, and every program has a meal plan that you can use to reduce calories and lose weight while you follow the exercise portion of the plan. If you need more equipment for your program, you can purchase it on the website, too.

There are online components available to those who have purchased a workout program from Beachbody, too. For a small fee, you can get more features such as customized meal plans and live chats and videos from trainers, but you can also opt to join for free. Free members are still eligible to log their workouts and be entered to win prizes, as well as access message boards and support coaches.

Working out at the gym isn't for everyone. All those hard bodies can be intimidating if you have a few extra pounds to lose, and it doesn't really matter where you do your workout, anyway. The exercise you get in your living room is just as good as if you did it at the gym or outdoors, so get moving-- inside, outside, or wherever else you can think of.

Pointers On Feeding Your Vegetarian Baby

By Owen Jones

Many vegetarians and even more vegans have a problem when it comes to suckling their new-born babies. This is because many vegetarians and most vegans are against the consumption of animal produce. This is a problem because it has been stated by the vast majority of doctors and mid-wives that mother' breast milk is the best food for a baby. This is because mother's breast milk will contain a selection of protective substances against diseases and allergies.

However, if a woman decides that she cannot give her baby her breast milk for philosophical reasons, it is not a big problem, because there have always been women that cannot feed their children in this way for one reason or another. Typical reasons may be illness or malnutrition. There are preparations you can buy to give your baby everything it needs, so there is no need to be anxious.

Whether you breast feed or not, make sure that your baby gets enough vitamin B12. It will also need lots of vitamin D, which comes from sunlight. There are different estimates of how much exposure is enough, but ten minutes a day or so is about average. The one thing that all medical workers will agree on however, is that the baby should not run any risk of getting sun burn and if the sun is strong, the eyes have to be shielded too.

Iron is an important part of anyone's diet and breast milk can supply enough for a four to six month old, because breast milk is not particularly rich in iron. After that time, food should be selected that has a higher iron content. Meat will provide the iron for a meat-eater, so a vegetarian mother has to take this into account. The advice of your physician, midwife or dietitian will be priceless here as elsewhere.

A great deal of parents give their infant rice cereal fortified with iron as one of the baby's first foods. Check with your medical doctor, but it is usually a decent idea to continue with your breast milk or formula feeds even if you are feeding rice cereal. Other grains and cereals such as oats, barley and corn can be used too, but they should be put through a blender first and mixed with fruit or / and vegetable puree.

You might be advised that the iron content of these foods is still not adequate, in which case it is fairly standard to be given an iron supplement to add to the baby's food. It is around this time, after the baby is all right eating cereal, that fruit and vegetable purees can be given in their own right. Make sure that the fruit and vegetables are properly pureed or mashed.

Bananas, avocado, apples and canned peaches or pears are all good choices here as are vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, peas, sweet potatoes, and green beans, although they have to be cooked first, naturally. There are lots of decent recipes on the Net or at your GP's surgery to ensure that your baby gets all the nutrients it needs from a vegetarian diet,

What Are The Types Of Diabetes

By Sue Twiggs

Anyone who knows diabetes recognizes that it's a medical disorder which causes the body to produce too much urine. It doesn't end there though; in addition , you get to suffer much pain because your organs aren't getting enough of insulin so they are not operating effectively. Never a good sign, that one. But fortunately however, nowadays there are effective remedies that assist to keep the condition under control. Taking and using these right treatments as well as avoiding the types of foods that you ought to avoid, can all work to assist you to maintain your problem at bay.

There are various kinds of diabetes, and possibly the most popular is diabetes mellitus. This one functions by making you generate excessive urine due to the lack of the insulin hormone secretion. Don't even start to think of the condition as one which is uncomplicated to deal with because most people undergo it nowadays, and they'renot likely glad about it. People who suffer from diabetes have their pancreas producing inadequate quantities of insulin. This does not sound like a big deal since you don't know a lot about what this insulin hormone does. I'll make that an assignment; read up on it, and you'll understand why no one likes to suffer from diabetes. Sure, having learned that Grandpa or Grandma suffer from diabetes, you could have thought it was a disease only older folks suffered from. You couldn't be more wrong. One time i ran into a thirty year old guy who couldn't eat some foods anymore simply because the doctor said it would kill him. He was dealing with diabetes!

To keep a long story short, diabetes kills when it gets out of control or when it gets complicated. If you suffer from it, you want to do everything in your power to see that this does not happen. Everything in your power!

You will do well to always watch your diet. All those sweets are so... well, sweet. But they have a function to perform in your body. Once that is done, what is left is excess, and that excess can build up into diabetes. Eat them, but don't eat them too much.

Isn't it ironic? Two of the most uncomfortable conditions that people have to live with are caused, more or less, by the same things: sugar, calories, too much of carbohydrates. They are obesity and diabetes. Funny to think that dealing with either one can help you kill two birds with one stone. What else could you possibly need to know about preventive measures?

When you suffer from diabetes, what happens is that you have allowed your glucose levels to build up in your blood and urine to an unfavorable limit. One of its most common symptoms is that you urinate too much. When that begins to happen, you want to get tested in a hurry.

Flavor Drops For Weight Loss

By George Napoli

There are a number of places that sell flavor drops for weight loss. This is a very good way for people to get the amount of water they need, even if they may not like to drink water. This article will explain why this method of water drinking is so effective for many people.

Water is known as a great thirst quencher but if one is used to other things, this will not be their first choice. When a person gains a significant number of pounds, it is because of the toxins that have been accumulated over time. These toxins need to be flushed out of the body. The best way to do this is by drinking lots of water.

Many people are dehydrated and do not realize it. They reach for juices and colas not realizing that their body is crying out for pure water. They may even stuff their bodies with food, when they really should be drinking water. But, if the water does not taste the same as juice or other beverages, they would not drink it.

There are many people who do not like water because of the taste. Water usually has no taste or order. If a person is used to drinking juice or pop, they may not like to drink water. This is due to the fact that they are accustom to the taste of juice. As a result, water does not appeal to them. But, if one can have the same taste without the sugar and other chemicals, then they can still get the amount of water that they need.

Adding your favorite taste to water is one way to enjoy drinking it. There are wide varieties available, but the best ones come from natural sources. There is no need to worry about calories and other factors that can prevent one from losing the pounds they want. The only thing that will change is the taste.

Water is one of the most essential nutrients in the world. No one can live without it for very long without harmful effects to their body. Flavor drops are a great way to make water drinking exciting, especially for weight loss. This can only be true however if there are no calories, chemicals and other things that might make it difficult to lose those extra pounds.

Choosing The Best Foodstuffs

By Owen Jones

Every stage of cooking is vital: meal planning, meal preparation and presentation, yet before any of this can take place it is essential to choose the items that you are going to cook. The ability to select high quality foodstuffs is also vital. Food deteriorates after a certain length of time so knowing which signs to look for is the art to this specific aspect of cooking.

There are a number of considerations to produce selection. For example, the cook has to judge whether the product is fresh, ripe or over ripe. Is the amount of waste associated with this produce acceptable? Will this produce supply the necessary amount of nutrients? Do the intended consumers like it or will they like it? Does the cost validate choosing this alternative?

Balancing all these considerations is really some feat that maybe a billion people carry out every day and perhaps a number of times a day. It is just remarkable. However, the best cooks or household managers need experience to do it correctly most of the time yet you can only get experience by 'doing' and doing involves making mistakes from time to time. There is nothing wrong with that - making mistakes is a standard part of the learning process.

There are in essence three elements to the successful selection of food. These are: 1] the material of which it is composed; 2] its worth or potential to provide energy and or nutrients and vitamins and 3] how readily these qualities can be extracted in a digestible way.

It is only after you have answers to these three questions that you can know whether a product is worth the money. In other words, while you might always know the cost of an article of food, you may not always know its value.

It is clear from the above that the cook who takes his or her task seriously has a mammoth task on hand to know what human bodies need at the different stages of growth, illness and even just recovery from standard wear and tear; to know what articles of food can supply those needs; how to pick foods that are at the peak of condition and how to prepare those foods so that you gain the most of that products potential.

Then there are the other considerations of whether you or your family will eat those products at all or whether they will only eat them if prepared according to particular recipes and finally, whether you can afford those foods.

As far as preparing children to eat or at least taste different foodstuffs is concerned, it is vital to get started as soon as possible. Children do not know what is healthy for them and allowing them to eat hamburgers and chips every day, because it is 'all they will eat' is nonsense. Children have to be taught to eat what is put in front of them until they are competent to make their own decisions.

Apples: It is a well known saying that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. The person who said this may very well have been a diabetic. Apples and other citrus fruits contain pectin which raises the body potential to convert glucose into energy by improving metabolism and reducing insulin deficiency. Circumstances like heart disease and kidney damage can also be prevented by consuming apples.

Jambuls: This fruit, generally often called black plum, helps diabetics by preventing starch from converting into blood glucose. Jambuls contain the potent ingredients resin, albumen, gallic acid and essential oil that allow a diabetic to manage the symptoms of high blood sugar level with ease.

The Constituents Of Different Foodstuffs

By Owen Jones

Unfortunately, not all foods are manufactured equal which makes the job of the dedicated cook more problematic, because it means that the cook has to understand the dietary requirements of humans at all stages of life, which foods can fulfill those needs yet, for normal families, within a finite budget.

Therefore, it is useful to know the constituents of food - that is, how much water, which vitamins, how much protein, fat and carbohydrate everything holds. If you know these proportions in each foodstuff, you can match them to your family's needs, and also choose the right method of serving the food, because some means of preparation destroy some of these properties and so ought to be shunned.

It is possible to cook very successfully for a family without knowing all these facts, yet knowing them either by having picked it up from an older relative or by study makes success more assured. Let us take a look at the five most common needs of all human beings, if not indeed all mammals.

Water is the largest component of human bodies and needs to make up the greatest part of our intake too. We are continuously using up our water content in evaporation, repair, replenishment and cleaning. Luckily, there is also a lot of water in a lot of items that we eat, eg fruit, meat and fish, yet we still have to drink water to keep our fluid levels up. Dehydration kills.

Next in importance is mineral matter - that is vitamins and nutrients. It is not a problem to derive this mineral matter, because plants suck it up from the ground and so, if you eat enough plant life, you should eat enough minerals. By plant life, I mean fruit, vegetables and fungi. Carnivores can consume a concentrated mix of plant life by eating meat, however many people have given up meat for one reason or another.

Different plant life has a different allotment and concentration of mineral. In general, cooking does not destroy mineral content, but over cooking can result in the mineral leaching out into the water they are boiled in.

Humans require protein to grow and repair themselves so a deficiency of protein is the foremost problem for vegetarians. It is not an insurmountable problem, but it is a worry. Carnivores acquire their protein from meat, fish and dairy. The process of cooking protein makes it more easily digestible for humans; dogs and cats do not have this need.

A great deal is talked about fat, yet fat is a vital component of the human diet. A fat-free diet is not healthy for us, but the difficulty is that fat is simple to get, particularly from junk food. Carnivores get most of their fat from meat, yet fat is not difficult for vegetarians, because there is fat in almost every type of food, including nuts and grains.

Carbohydrates have also caused a lot of controversy (particularly with the Atkins Diet), but carbohydrates are also a necessary part of our diet. Again, it is not difficult to get all the carbohydrates that we need. Carbohydrates are most prevalent in starches and sugars yet there is no doubt that we should monitor our consumption of carbohydrates in the same manner that we ought to with fats.

3 French Dip Sandwich Recipes

By Owen Jones

French dip sandwich recipes are very well-liked. The French dip sandwich was invented by accident by a Frenchman, but he was not living in France. He had emigrated to the United States and was living in Los Angeles. Philippe Mathieu had opened his sandwich bar and delicatessen known as 'Philippe The Original' on North Alameda Street in 1908, but the Eureka moment came ten years later when a policeman came in to buy a beef sandwich.

Philippe unintentionally dropped it in the tray in which the beef had been roasted, yet served it up anyway. The policeman returned with a few friends the next day to try the 'dipped' sandwich so the French dip sandwich was born. The sandwich bar is still there and still serving French dip sandwich recipes nearly 90 years later.

Being French, Philippe would have described his sandwiches 'au jus', which is the same as 'with juice', but lots of Americans do not realize this so ask for their French dip sandwiches 'with au jus'. Nowadays, the sauce is frequently specially made or concocted separately so that it is far more elaborate than merely the meat juices from the pan, but you can make it as complicated or as simple as you want. There is also no reason why you can not make up vegetarian or fish French dip sandwich recipes

3 Unusual Recipes For Bread

By Owen Jones

Western people love bread, although not everyone eats it because it is fattening. Eating too much bread is fattening, but good bread is very satisfying, so there is no need to over indulge, which means that it does not have to become a burden on your waist band. Similarly, good bread does not need butter or margarine, so that is another saving on calories and oil.

Bread can also be a good source of dietary fibre and once you have consumed real bread, you will never go back to white, sliced, supermarket bread. In fact, it is the white sliced bread that gives bread such a bad reputation.

These recipes are meant to be prepared and cooked in a bread cooking machine, but they may be mixed by hand too. I have used a bread making machine for years, but I used to make it by hand, and I can honestly say that I can not tell the difference between them.

Furthermore, the machine saves a great deal of time and because it cooks on a timer, you can wake up to warm bread every morning, if you want.

Recipe 1

Celery Bread

1 sachet yeast 1/4 teaspoon ginger 1/4 teaspoon sugar 3 cups Better for Bread flour 1/2 cup quick-cooking oats 2 tablespoons gluten 2 teaspoons celery seeds 1 1/2 teaspoons elery, garlic or onion salt 3/4 cup celery -- fresh / slice thin 1 tablespoon celery leaves, fresh / chopped 1 egg 10 3/4 ounces cream of celery soup 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 3 tablespoons warm low-fat milk

Combine all ingredients and cook

Recipe 2

Citrus Bread

2/3 cup water 2 cups white bread flour 1 teaspoon dry milk 2 teaspoons sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon butter 2 tablespoons orange marmalade 2 teaspoons lime juice 1 pinch lemon peel 2 teaspoons yeast (active, dry)

Combine all ingredients but cook.

Recipe 3

Chart House Squaw Bread

1 1/4 cups warm water 2 tablespoons molasses 1/2 teaspoon caramel coloring * -- optional. 1 1/2 teaspoons malted barley flour ** 2 cups bread flour 1/2 cup whole wheat flour 1/2 cup unprocessed bran or wheat bran 1/4 cup dark brown sugar (3 TB) 1 1/2 tablespoons oatbran 1 1/2 tablespoons rolled oats 2 teaspoons granola 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 2 1/2 teaspoons yeast (1 envelope)

Oil yet/or butter are not needed.

* Caramel colouring is just used to give the bread an almost pumpernickel colour. You can get it in a cake decorating store . ** The malted barley flour is also known as diastatic malt powder.

In a bowl mix bread flour, whole wheat flour, unprocessed bran, dark brown sugar, oatbran, rolled oats, granola, malted barley flour and salt.

In bread pan add water, molasses, but caramel coloring. Add flour mixture; top with yeast yet pick dark bread setting.

NOTE: Raisins could be added if desired. If you do, do not add the caramel colouring but blend the water, 1/4 cup raisins, molasses and brown sugar before adding to the machine.

What Are The Types Of Diabetes

By Sue Twiggs

Knowing the right thing may help you with this condition. Not to mention, being unsure of what needs to be known will be unfavorable for you too. You see, with diabetes, a good exercise regimen can help to turn your diabetes into nothing but an uncomfortable rash that itches only once in a while. Most of the discomfort reduces, and you are better suited to handle it. However, you do still have to stay close to the remainder of your medications. Doctor's orders.

Sure, having heard that Grandpa or Grandma suffer from diabetes, you could have thought it was a disease only old folks suffered from. You couldn't be more wrong. I once came across a thirty year old dude who couldn't eat some foods anymore because the doctor said they'd kill him. He was suffering from diabetes!

To keep a long story short, diabetes kills when it gets out of control or when it gets complicated. If you suffer from it, you want to do everything in your power to see that this does not happen. Everything in your power!

Insulin is the primary hormone in your body that helps your cells to absorb glucose for energy. When you don't get enough insulin in your system, you cannot regulate your blood sugar. It becomes dangerous and can cause you illness and death. That illness is diabetes.

Cooking Essentials (Part 2)

By Owen Jones

The control of waste is an vital aspect of cooking, which is part of household management. One of the first items to realize whilst contemplating waste is the distinction between waste and refuse. Waste is the disposal of something that could have been eaten, whereas refuse is the disposal of something that could not have been consumed.

This is an vital difference, because there is little you can do with something like, say, egg shells, yet if you purchase so many eggs that half of them go bad before you can use them, it is a different question. Over purchasing is a problem, particularly if you attempt to do most of your shopping in one go.

The secret to wasting less is in experience and know-how. For example, if beef rises above a certain cost an inexperienced cook might decide to purchase pork or lamb, yet the choice is not that simple, because there is much more inedible fat in pork and lamb than there is in lean beef.

After poor selection of products, the next biggest source of waste is selecting the wrong way of preparing or cooking the food. Peeling too thick or cooking at a very high heat are good examples of this problem.

A successful week's menu ought to supply all the nutrients, vitamins and fibre that a person requires. We do not have to eat all vitamins and all nutrients each day, yet there are some that we should eat every day and we ought to eat enough fibre every day as well. This is not a problem to set up. Specialists recommend eating five portions of fruit and vegetables each day, yet maybe the skill comes in providing variation to avert boredom.

Some individuals can accomplish this variation fairly intuitively, but for the rest of us there is another line of attack and it is known as planning. You can easily plan your meals for a week before you go shopping. Planning your meals like this will also save you money, because it discourages impulse purchasing. If you still have an issue with impulse buying, order your groceries through the Internet.

Two good tips for keeping costs down and for still providing variety were also largely ostracized in the Seventies and Eighties, but which are also experiencing a come-back now are: eating seasonal, local food and preparing three (or at least two) course meals.

Local seasonal ingredients are cheaper than stuff flown in from half-way around the world (or should be) and beginning dinner off with soup and a bread roll and finishing it with a dessert means that you do not have to eat so much of the main course, which is normally the most expensive of the three courses.

Sandwiches can include meat or not and in fact are a robust meal for a vegetarian. Sandwiches are the vegetarian's counter to a hamburger. So, I have put three very nourishing sandwich recipes below that do not involve meat.

Recipe 1

French Onion Sandwiches Serves 4

In a large skillet melt butter. Add mushrooms and cook on medium-high heat for 2 to 3 minutes until tender. Remove from skillet, retaining juice.

Cook onion in juice until tender.

Combine stock, cornstarch, Worcestershire sauce, garlic (or garlic powder) and pepper. Add to skillet. Cook and stir until bubbly. Cook and stir 2 minutes more.

Place mushrooms on bread. Top with cheese and onion mix.

Recipe 2

Cook mushrooms. Drain on paper towels.

Meanwhile, in pie pan, beat egg white with salt. In another pie pan, combine cornstarch and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Dip tomato slices in egg-whites to cover both sides, then dip in cornmeal to coat both sides well. Lay on waxed paper.

In mushroom juice in skillet, cook tomato, a few at a time, on medium-high heat until golden brown and heated through, around 3 minutes. Drain.

In small bowl, combine mayonnaise, yogurt, chives with 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Spread on toast. Arrange lettuce, tomatoes, and mushrooms between toast slices.

Recipe 3

Greek Salad Heroes Serves 2

3/4 cup thinly sliced fresh mushrooms 1/2 cup thinly sliced cucumber 2 tablespoons ripe olives 2 tablespoons crumbled feta cheese 1 tablespoon white balsamic vinegar 1/8 teaspoon dried oregano 2 Roma or small tomatoes, thinly sliced 1 clove garlic, minced 2 (2 1/2 ounce) submarine rolls 2 lettuce leaves

Combine first 8 items in a small bowl; mix lightly. Let stand for 30 minutes, mixing occasionally.

Cut a thin slice off the top of each roll and set aside.

Cut a 2-inch wide, V-shape wedge down the length of each roll (as they do at Subway). Reserve bread wedges for another use.

Drain vegetable mixture. Line each roll with a lettuce leaf and spoon vegetable mixture evenly on top, cover with roll tops.

These healthy sandwich recipes without meat create a great snack or light luncheon and can be kept fresh in a lunch box all day.

Dealing With Deadly Diabetic Ketoacidosis

By Ned Dagostino

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a little known medical condition. Apart from those who have this condition, and their friends and family, the general populace is fairly ignorant of the severe implications of this condition. If the condition is untreated for too long, it may prove fatal. Type 1 diabetics are prone to suffer this condition. But this condition can just as easily occur in a non-diabetic person. The picture that emerges from studies of this condition shows that persons who have suffered severe dehydration or bacterial infection and viral attacks are susceptible to diabetic ketoacidosis.

This condition is related to the metabolic functions of the body. Food is digested to produce glucose, a form of sugar. Glucose is used by the muscles directly to carry out our basic functions. Glucose which is not needed immediately is converted to and stored as fat. Whenever the glucose levels dwindle, the body takes recourse to the stored energy reserves within our body, that is, the fats, reconverting them back to glucose, that is energy.

The presence of the fatty acid in the blood changes the chemistry of the blood and makes it more acidic than it ought to be. This condition is called ketoacidosis. The body is sufficiently competent to eliminate the excess ketones from the blood on a regular basis. If the ketoacidosis goes beyond the normal level and if it is chronic, then the normal blood chemistry is altered to such an extent that normal life becomes impossible for the sufferer. The high-risk categories are more likely to get diabetic ketoacidosis, but the other catgories are vulnerable to this condition nonetheless.

Diabetic ketoacidosis becomes dangerous due to delayed treatment. Most people who have diabetic ketoacidosis aren't even aware that they have it. The symptoms manifest themselves in the later stages of the condition. Recognizing them may well mean the difference between a life-critical existence and a normal one. The chief symptoms that are easily discernible are given here for your information.

Lip and skin dryness, heightened skin temperature, abnormal skin tone such as paleness or flushed appearance, are directly related to diabetic ketoacidosis.

Another telltale sign is impaired vision. A person with diabetic ketoacidosis experiences severe blurring of vision.

The breath can acquire a peculiar odor best described as sickly "sweet smelling".

The person with diabetic ketoacidosis can feel very tired, so tired that he sleeps almost throughout the day. He won't even take part in those activities that he likes.

Diabetic ketoacidosis severely reduces the appetite. Sometimes, a person will not be able to keep the food down, bringing it up almost immediately after eating it.

The most critical manifestation of diabetic ketoacidosis is related to the thought processing capability of the brain. The person goes through spells where he is completely confused.

Careful monitoring of the blood glucose is the only effective way to control diabetic ketoacidosis. Diabetics who require insulin shots should be extremely regular in taking them. Dehydration must be countered by taking rehydration salts. Supplementary glucose should be taken if the glucose level drops sharply below the minimum level. Everything must be done under proper medical supervision, that goes without saying for such a serious, and possibly fatal, condition! The treatment is not an overnight cure, but it is the only effective one. Take care!

Eight Shocking Causes of Dehydration Part One

By Mark Rosenberg, M.D.

As a health conscious individual, you should know the importance of drinking plenty of fluids. It is likely that you sip lemonade on hot days, drink water during tough workouts and pack sports drinks in your child or grandchild's lunch bag for soccer practice. These are all important steps to squelch the common causes of dehydration, but what about the uncommon causes that catches you unaware?

A wide array of medical issues can lead to dehydration. Considering that our bodies are made up of 50% to 65% water, this element is critical to virtually all our physical functions. Every organ and system of the body depends on water, so a shortage of fluid can naturally lead to serious health consequences. When my patients mention symptoms such as lightheadedness, lack of focus, or fatigue, I go through the following list of 8 surprising causes of dehydration.

1) Winter Weather- Dehydration is normally associated with the heat of summer when our bodies lose a lot of fluid through sweat. Winter, however, can be just as problematic due to very dry air and time spent indoors with dry heat. You may not sweat, but your body is still losing liquid to the dry air in the environment.

2) Irritable Bowel Disease - IBD, as well as its cousins, Crohn's disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome are medical conditions that often cause diarrhea. This results in rapid loss of fluids, although you may not feel thirsty.

3) Incontinence - The aging process can diminish our natural sense of thirst, but if you also suffer from incontinence, you may be reluctant to drink fluids throughout the day. Sipping often in small amounts is essential to avoid becoming dehydrated.

4) Fever - Fevers are caused by too-high body temperatures, and sweating is normal. Although people drink frequently when they sweat during exercise, they often fail to consume adequate fluids when they have a fever.

5) Medication - One common side effect of many medicines is increased frequency of urination. You need to compensate for these additional lost fluids by drinking more than usual. Meds that often cause this problem are diuretics, blood pressure drugs, antihistamines and psychiatric drugs.

6) Vomiting - Parents of small children who are always catching one bug or another know to provide liquids to replenish electrolytes and other nutrients that are lost. When many adults get sick, however, they forget about the importance of fluids, perhaps because they don't get sick very often.

7) Diabetes - If you have diabetes that goes undiagnosed or uncontrolled, you may be at risk for dehydration. Two forms of the disease, diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus, can cause increased thirst and urination.

8 ) Flying - Always drink plenty of water before boarding an airplane. The very dry environment in the aircraft can quickly lead to dehydration if you don't drink enough fluid. Bring your own bottle of water so you aren't forced to wait for the drink service, and avoid alcohol and caffeine, which also cause dehydration.

If you suffer from dehydration, I hope this list has given you some clues as to the cause of your thirst. Don't forget, that if you feel thirsty, your body is already dehydrated. Drink a large glass of water and rest for 30 minutes or so, to allow your body to be replenished. Then keep sipping!

If you think a serious medical condition is causing dehydration, see your doctor right away. In the meantime, be sure to consume 5 to 8 glasses of water everyday, and more if you sweat or are exposed to extreme climates. In my next article, I will discuss some of the risks associated with dehydration and go into further detail about how to avoid it.

A Lifetime Vision: 5 Tips for Healthy Eyes

By Sanderson Krumpf

In a survey done by the American Optometry Association (AOA), over 50% of Americans consider eyesight they're most valuable sense. They worry more about losing their vision than any other sense. Even though we put great emphasis on this important sense, most of us give little thought to keeping our eyes healthy. Here are some tips to keep your eyes in peak condition.

Have a Yearly Eye Exam: Maybe you think your vision is fine, but how can you be sure? The only way to be certain your eyes are in good shape is to have a comprehensive eye exam by an eye care professional. It's quite common for people to overlook significant changes in their visual performance. They don't realize their vision could be improved with glasses or contact lenses.

Eye diseases like glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and age-related macular degeneration can come on without warning. A comprehensive dilated eye exam that enables an eye doctor to see into the back surface of the eye can result in early detection of eye disease, improving the chance that they can be treated effectively.

Check Your Family's Eye Health History: Conversations about family medical history can be awkward, but essential. Most diseases and conditions of the eye are hereditary. Understanding your family's medical history can provide an early indicator of risk for disease of the eye.

The Right Diet is Good for the Eyes: There's a common belief that "carrots" are the best veggie for the eyes. However, leafy, green vegetables like spinach actually offer more eye health benefits. Fruits and vegetables are both valuable to eye health (along with all the other body parts). Research suggests the omega-3 rich fish like salmon and tuna also offer health benefits for the eyes.

Keep a Healthy Weight and Lifestyle: Obesity leads to serious medical conditions like diabetes that can result in loss of vision, diabetic eye disease and glaucoma. Consider speaking with your physician if you feel you are struggling to maintain a healthy weight. If you don't smoke, keep it that way. If you've started...quit. The dangers of cigarette smoke is well known, but it has also been linked retinal and optic nerve damage and cataracts.

Rest and Protect Your Eyes: More people buy sunglasses as a fashion statement than as eye protection, but sunglasses that block out 99-100% of UV-A and UV-B radiation are a great health accessory. Anyone involved in athletics should be wearing eye protection when the activity recommends it.

In today's modern world, most people spend a large portion of their day staring at a monitor or screen. Optometrists recommend the 20-20-20 rule which suggests you should look away from the screen to a distance of 20 feet for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. This helps reduce the strain on your eyes.

Clean Hands, Clean Eyes: Before placing contacts in your eyes, thoroughly clean your hands with soap and water. This reduces your chances of infecting the yes. Replace your contact lenses on the recommended schedule and disinfect them according to instructions.

Follow these recommendations and you'll see better and feel better while reducing your risk of eye disease and other conditions affecting the eye.

Avandia Lawyer - What Patients Should Be Aware of Before Finding an Avandia Lawyer

By Glen Bass

Each medication has side effects. There are those that has mild effects and there are those that can be life threatening. As for Rosiglitazone drugs for diabetes, like Avandia, it also has serious side effects. though they've already proven themselves as effective just like insulin sensitizers, these drugs can be potentially harmful to Type 2 diabetes patients. Due to this, you need to learn more about the potential dangers if using this drug.

Heart disease is considered to be the most common one of the side effects caused by Rosiglitazone diabetes medications. Several scientific studies have shown that the intake of this medication may interfere with the functioning of the heart's fat cells in an adverse way.

In one particularly study last 2007, they found out the risk of heart attack in diabetes patients who are using this drug has increased to 43%. Last 2010, an FDA representative stated officially that Rosiglitazone resulted to 300 more heart failures. This makes it more threatening than other drugs for treating Type 2 diabetes.

There were also reports that mention how stroke can be another potential side effect form the intake of Rosiglitazone diabetes drugs. The study which was published in 2010 had concluded how such medications can increase the risk of stroke among the elderly diabetes patients. This is by about 27%. There are still several studies that mentioned the risk of stroke which was due to these medications. It is noted to be statistically insignificant. This means, it is actually are for diabetes patients who are taking the drug to experience stroke caused by its use.

As for the manufacturer of this medication, they openly admitted the incidence about limb injuries among female diabetes patients who were taking Rosiglitazone. They said it is much higher as compared to those taking other kinds of drugs for diabetes. So the fractures in the arms and in the hands, legs or feet are all potential side effects of Rosiglitazone medications. This is since the active ingredient of these drugs work by affecting the body's fat cells and thus causing the serious side effects.

There are also reports that diabetes medications can also result to eye damage. It is even suggested that using these drugs based on its active ingredient and on the intake of diabetes drugs that come from other groups may actually lead to certain damages to the retina, macular edema as well as blindness. The illness itself can result to this eye condition. Later on, it can lead to total blindness. For this reason, any possibility of the medication contributing to eye damage cannot be unmistakably defined. However, there were reports of patients who have improved vision when the discontinued the drug treatment.

In rare cases, the intake of Rosiglitazone may result in acute hepatitis. The side effect usually takes place in the initial period of the intake of the respective medication. This side effect is more commonly observed in patients who have been impaired by hepatitis beforehand.

For individuals who are either suffering from or who have suffered from any of the Rosiglitazone side effects mentioned and were not warned about these risks, taking legal action in order to demand for compensation from the manufacturer of the drug is a good action to take. As per the manufacturer, they have received more than 10,000 lawsuit settlements in 2010.

Diabetes: What Is It?

By Tony Savvides

When it comes to a disease that is prevalent the world over, then diabetes mellitus is one of the most common ones. There are a variety of different causes of diabetes such as stress, lifestyle, lack of exercise, heredity and obesity. Diabetes is basically a metabolic disorder of the body.

A diabetic cannot produce enough insulin or use the insulin that they do produce effectively enough to convert starch, sugar and other food to energy. People suffering from diabetes have high blood glucose levels. Humans however are meant to have a low blood sugar level; in order for a diabetic to achieve this low level, they will have to either take medication or to take insulin injections.

The ideal blood sugar level in humans is between 70 mg/dl-110mg/dl on an empty stomach. People with a blood sugar level of less than 70mg/dl would be suffering from hypoglycemia. Hyperglycemia on the other hand is what diabetics often have when their blood sugar level rises above 110mg/dl.

Diabetes: The Different Types

When it comes to diabetes there are a few different types known as gestational diabetes, Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes. In case of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, the patient's body does not breakdown glucose. Instead, they use proteins and fat for producing energy. This can cause and excessive weight loss and it can also lead to a condition known as polyphegia.

When a pregnant woman develops diabetes it is called gestational diabetes. Though this type of diabetes may not be permanent, it is dangerous for both the pregnant woman and the baby. Anyone who develops gestational diabetes will have to keep a check on their blood sugar levels after the baby has been born.

Problems Which Could Occur

Though diabetes is not a dangerous health condition, if not controlled, it can lead to death. Problems such as heart disease, kidney failure and neuropathy can occur if blood sugar levels are allowed to get too high. Diabetes sufferers also have a much higher chance of developing heart disease and suffering from strokes.

However knowledge is a powerful tool and coupled with the right diet, exercise and medication, those with diabetes can go on to have long, normal lives.

The Nice Weekday Dinner Is Pizza Delivery

By Marcus Hall

Today the majority of households have two working parents who can find it overwhelming, at times, to come home after a long day and start cooking a healthy three-course meal. One of the best inexpensive solutions is to order pizza delivery or takeaway.

Pizza delivery is a very healthy choice depending on the toppings chosen to put on the crust. With several types of crusts to choose from along with all the toppings, keeping the pie healthy can become a bit overwhelming. It is healthiest to stick with vegetables and tomato sauce on a thin crust. If meat is desired chicken is a low fat option. If flavour is what you seek, the choices are abundant with toppings of nuts, herbs, spices, and even fruits. Flavoured crusts are becoming more and more common along with crusts stuffed with cheese. Most pizzerias offer appetizers, salads, desserts and beverages to accompany your meal; with all the choices pleasing family members will be easy to do.

When ordering pizza delivery via phone always ask for what special is offered. It is common for pizzerias to offer a daily special not advertise elsewhere. If ordering over the Internet, as is commonly done nowadays, the specials will be advertised on the website. Most pizzerias will call to confirm the pizza order is legitimate; this happens whether the order is via phone or Internet.

Pizza delivery is not an easy job for the one delivering the pizza. It is common courtesy to tip the delivery person when there is no delivery surcharge. Even if a surcharge exists it is courteous to tip considering the cost of fuel and especially if the pizzas arrive hot and in a timely manner.

Takeaway, takeout or pizza delivery is truly one of the best options out there for a healthy meal which can be enjoyed by all members of your family. It is quick, easy and inexpensive. All it requires is for one to keep in mind healthy food choices in order to create the best pie possible for your family.

Pre Diabetic? Here Are Some Diet Tips You Should Know

By Becky Wolfe

If a pre diabetic diet is what your doctor advised you to follow, chances are you've been diagnosed with insulin resistance or pre-diabetes. According to your blood glucose test, your body is becoming resistant to insulin. Your blood glucose is probably higher than normal, although not high enough to give a diagnosis of diabetes. However, you need to take steps now to avoid becoming diabetic.

Diabetes is a serious illness and it can have significant complications. Suffering from damage to the circulation, arteries, and nerves are the diabetics. The results of these problems include impotence, kidney failure, strokes, and impaired vision. You may want to avoid these things.

People with a diagnosis of pre diabetes are lucky in many ways. There's still time to turn things around because they had a warning. A few changes to your lifestyle could mean that you can escape ever having a diagnosis of diabetes.

Following a pre diabetic diet will be the most important thing that you can do for your health right now. If you are overweight, your doctor will probably have recommended that you try to reduce your weight. The changes you make to when and what you eat is as important as trying to reduce calories.

Increasing the amount of fiber that you eat and cutting down on sugar and refined carbs is one of the most important factors in a pre diabetic diet. Try to follow some of these pre diabetic diet tips:

Instead of fruit juice, choose whole fruit. Juice has had the fiber removed so its natural sugars are absorbed into the bloodstream much faster, causing the blood sugar spike that you want to avoid if you are trying to normalize your blood glucose levels.

When it comes to potatoes and other root vegetables, it's better if you don't peel them. The peel contains more fiber. You should buy the organic kind in order to avoid the pesticide that may be found in the peel. If you like food from fast food restaurants like pizza and burgers, try making them at your home instead. Besides using whole grain bread, you can also use less fat and end up with fewer calories.

Eat meals at regular times. This will improve the regulation of your blood sugar. You may have had a sugar rush after eating and had a low a few hours later so you need to choose foods that are lower on the glycemic index and eat more often.

If you're sleepy after you ate, then it's possible you ate too much. What you can do is have a salad or eat more greens before your main course. Doing this can fill the stomach without taking too many calories.

Besides a pre diabetic diet, doing regular exercise is also important. To keep your systems running smoothly and regulate your blood glucose levels, do some physical activity every day. Even though what you do depends on your fitness levels, you still need to at least take a half hour walk every day.

Your body can effectively use insulin with the help of exercise. When you're effectively using insulin, blood glucose will then be converted to energy. If not, then it will be turned to fat. Blood sugar levels are regulated with the help of exercise. But the effect only lasts for between 12 and 48 hours, so it is important to exercise every day if you have pre diabetes. Of course, this is in addition to following your pre diabetic diet.

Symptoms Of Gestational Diabetes - What Are The Signs Of Diabetes In Pregnancy?

By Ross Flowers

Symptoms of gestational diabetes may indicate you developing diabetes during pregnancy. In later stages of pregnancy is when this usually occurs. By definition, it happens to women who have not been diabetic before they became pregnant.

Gestational diabetes usually begins between the 24th and 28th weeks of pregnancy, although it may appear outside of these times. It affects about 4% of pregnant women.

Are You At Risk Of Developing Gestational Diabetes Symptoms?

You're more likely to be diabetic in pregnancy if, before becoming pregnant, you were obese. This means having a BMI of 30 or more. This can be checked against a height and weight chart. An example of an obese woman is someone who's 5 ft 5 inches in height and weighs 180lbs or above.

Having type 2 diabetes n the family, being over 35, having a history of giving birth to large babies, and high blood pressure are other risk factors.

Diabetes in Pregnancy - the Dangers

Diabetes in pregnancy can lead to serious problems for both mother and baby if it is not controlled. Pre-eclampsia and high blood pressure, premature birth, and excessive amniotic fluid is what these complications can include.

Causing problems for the baby is your blood glucose levels remaining high and not brought under control with treatment. The baby may grow larger than normal which can cause problems for both mother and baby during delivery. The baby can also develop diabetes and have an increased risk of fractures and jaundice.

If diabetes is well controlled in pregnancy, it is not usually dangerous for either the mother or the child. To control it, you may need changes in your diet or medication. Gestational diabetes can cause complications so it's important to know if you have it so that it can be treated.

What are the Main Gestational Diabetes Symptoms?

Gestational diabetes symptoms are the same as for other examples of type 2 diabetes. Frequent urination and unusual thirst are the things you may notice. This is because of the kidneys taking extra water from the body so they can excrete the glucose that's not dealt with by the endocrine system's insulin.

When you're tired and lethargic, this can also be a possible symptom. But women during pregnancy commonly experience this even though they're not diabetic. The same is true of needing to go to the bathroom more often. So it is sometimes hard to know if you have any signs of diabetes during pregnancy.

Most pregnant women routinely screen for diabetes by checking their blood glucose levels at regular intervals. Because it's one of the many tests done on blood samples during appointments with the doctor, you may not be aware this is happening.

Of course, if you are not having prenatal medical care for some reason, then you may not be getting screened. The possibility of becoming diabetic is just one of many reasons why it is important to have medical care while you are pregnant. If you think you have symptoms of gestational diabetes, then it's better to consult your doctor right away.
