The Symptoms Of Type 2 Diabetes Must Be Carefully Watched

By Clara Andrews

Symptoms of type 2 diabetes should be paid serious attention to because this kind of illness can cause some serious health issues. The symptoms of type two diabetes include a dry mouth, an increase of thirst and hunger, frequent urination and fatigue and headaches and blurred vision. These symptoms are also indicative of the possibility of increased risk of heart disease so when one notices these signs they should see a doctor immediately.

Thirst indicates that more sugar is accumulating in the bloodstream so more fluid is being taken from the tissues of the body. An increase in hunger implies that the organs and muscles are not able to be energized since there is not enough insulin to move the sugar into the cells where it is needed. The body will feel lethargic and tired.

In spite of eating more food the individual will experience weight loss because the body is tapping into the stored fat and muscle. It is unable to metabolize the glucose. The person will be irritable because their cells have no sugar. They will also have more infections and even experience the appearance of dark patches on their skin which is a sign that the body is resisting insulin.

Type 2 diabetes may not be diagnosed until the individual has started to have health complications. It often takes many years to develop this disease. Twenty-four million adults and children in the US have this disease and many millions more are not aware they too have the same illness.

Doctors will administer tests to determine their glucose level in the blood. The fasting plasma glucose test will determine blood sugar while the patient does not eat for eight hours. When the levels are found to be above 126 milligrams per deciliter they can be assumed to be in the pre-diabetic stage. This is enough warning for the patient to start improving their health habits to try to alleviate the situation.

A second test can also be given where the patient is allowed to eat food. When their blood sugar levels are above 200 mg/dL then they too are in the early stages of this disease. When the body resists insulin or the pancreas produces little of it then they will end up with diabetes. People who are overweight and lack exercise in their lives are more vulnerable to acquiring this sugar sickness.

The pancreas produces the hormone called insulin when people eat food. Insulin enables sugar to enter cells so the level of sugar will become less in the bloodstream. The pancreas in turn will produce less insulin. The glucose is produced in the liver where it is stored. Virtually no insulin is produced with type 1 diabetes so that this is a more serious form of the disease.

The symptoms of type 2 diabetes should be paid close attention to. They are indicative of an insulin problem and a simple test given by one's doctor will confirm what the blood sugar level is. The sooner the disease is diagnosed the sooner the patient can take measures to stop its progression.
