Hypertensive Urgency Understood

By Betty Dawson

Hypertensive urgency Is a dangerous condition where the blood pressure rises without the person realizing it, and there are no symptoms that can be recognized. When the blood pressure increases, the vital organs are not immediately put in danger, but unless the pressure is lowered within 24 hours there could be some serious physical damage.

There is a difference between hypertensive urgency and hypertensive emergency. Become aware of the difference. Hypertensive emergency occurs when the blood pressure increases to a level at which the organs are damaged and immediate assistance is needed. The patient is generally unaware of their blood pressure levels and will require medical attention. A crisis can occur, especially if the pressure increases further. This can happen in patients with or without a history of high blood pressure.

In recent years, due to advances in technology and new treatments for hypertensive urgency, the number of reported cases has fallen substantially. With the availability of affordable and reliable blood pressure monitoring kits, it has become possible for people to monitor their blood pressure on a daily basis. These modern monitors have a memory function that allows you to show your doctor your blood pressure readings over a period of time. There have been medical studies done that show that less than 30% of people suffering from hypertension have any hypertensive urgency problems.

Most people can suffer from both without realizing it. The condition can show less visible signs, leaving people to be unaware. However, the term "urgency" means exactly that. A person noticing their blood pressure increasing to high levels should take immediate action.

Using medication can help with a patient's symptoms. Treatments given to the patient from the doctor help lower blood pressure to an acceptable rate. Until the blood pressure level is under the right conditions and levels, the doctor may continue to monitor the patient. Once the coast is clear, the doctor will advise other treatment options such as diet and exercise. Additionally, a doctor will allow for no alcohol consumption.

Following the advice of your doctor will not only help with the current situation, it may also prevent any further increases of the blood pressure.

Hypertensive urgency should be treated immediately before the condition turns to further complications. Early signs include blurred vision and chest pains. Do not let these symptoms fool you; become aware.

When blurred vision and chest pains are visible, ensure the proper blood flow is being regulated to the organs. A person's blood pressure needs to be at acceptable rates before being labeled as "healthy" status. This information was intended to help educate people on the facts behind hypertensive urgency to prevent possible complications.
