Tai Chi Helps Diabetics Manage Their Illness

By Robbie Bainer

Yes it is unfortunate, but diabetes automatically increases your stress which makes it even more difficult to maintain good blood sugar numbers. But there are simple and easy things that you can do to lower your stress level. One of those ways is by learning Tai Chi. You will learn to move your body in strategic ways and also learn the importance of combining that with deep breathing exercises.

Breathing and Tai Chi

Tai Chi combines physical movement and deep breathing. As you learn each movement you should make sure that you are taking deep even breaths. Breathing this way helps your muscles to relax and release any built up tension. It will also help to keep your mind focused on the simple movements you are doing. A person with diabetes will find practicing Tai Chi very beneficial in dealing with their health issues.

Learning Tai Chi

Tai Chi has become quite popular and because of this it is easier to find instructional material, such as books and videos. Also more gyms are offering instructor lead classes. If you are interested in learning Tai Chi to help you manage your diabetes, then check out these ideas:

* Attend Tai Chi classes - If you are not familiar with Tai Chi then it is best to begin your training by attending a class that is lead by a trained instructor. As you work through the movements they will coach you and ensure your posture is correct and your breathing is done well.

* Buy a Tai Chi video - It is a great idea to continue to practice your new Tai Chi movements at home. Instructor lead videos are a great way for you to follow along and to make sure you do not forget anything.

* Practice on your own - After you have the basics of Tai Chi, it's a good idea to practice on your own so that you can learn how your body moves and you can begin to establish a personal Tai Chi practice.

* Use books to supplement your knowledge - If you still want a challenge from your Tai Chi practice, you can look at books to learn more movements and to find out other ways to move your body for stress relief.

Tai Chi is a great exercise for a person with diabetes because it releases the tension in your mind and in your muscles. Your overall health will benefit from it, because as your sugar numbers stabilize so will any worries you may have about other diabetic symptoms. Another great benefit is that Tai Chi can be done anywhere. Meaning you can do it at home, but you can also do it in a hotel room if you are a frequent traveler.

As a diabetic you can use Tai Chi to lower your blood sugar levels and to help yourself deal with any stressful times throughout your day.
