There Is More To The Diabetic Diet Than You May Realize

By Athena Hunter

The diabetic diet is does not limit you to certain foods and is not a weight loss fad. Yes, people talk about it and use those two words, but the interesting thing is that this so called diet is perfect for anyone.

One component of the diabetic diet approach is the ABC component. The goal is to create healthy levels of cardiovascular functions and blood chemistry. One test, the A factor, measures the three-month average of your blood sugar levels in what is called the hemoglobin A1c test. Your blood pressure is referenced by the B component. The levels of your cholesterol, specifically LDL and HDL cholesterol levels, are measured by the C component of the test. Everything will be normal if this test shows that all three factors are in the green.

Awareness of what you eat is critical when you're a diabetic. You have to remain diligent about what you eat with every meal. This isn't all that difficult as it's mostly a matter of forming new habits. One of the easiest guidelines is to make sure you have lots of colors on your plate. Make diverse choices of fruits, vegetables, and meats. You can even consult with a licensed dietitian to get individual help with the right diet for you.

Reading food labels is an excellent habit. Keep track of the amounts listed for the sugar and carbohydrates in your food.

Set a limit on the amount of carbohydrates you consume in a day. So, for example, if you eat something sweet like cake or a dessert, then subtract those carbohydrates (the sugars) from somewhere else. This technique, called carbohydrate substitution, is important to know.

If you're a woman with gestational diabetes, your diet is extremely important. In this scenario, you not only have to watch the kind of foods you eat, but also make sure that you eat according to a regular schedule. Forgetting meals can have dangerous consequences in such cases. As you don't want problems with your pregnancy, it's essential to make sure you eat regularly. If your meals are planned at specific times, you won't have to worry about forgetting them.

You can still remain active if you have diabetes. Professional athletes can still perform well even with this condition. Over time, the diabetic diet will play an increasingly important role. Your diet is your greatest way to maintaining a normal and active lifestyle. Watching what you eat and regular exercise will help you manage your diabetes.
